@jeff waugh: Indeed, i've corrected the spelling errors thanks! Ah, Crowd Sourced proof-reading nice.

@Thomas: It also extends a bit further as with your Java example if you update the Java file object will Sun take that change and re-incorporate it? The part of the community thing is knowing what exists beyond just JavaDoc -- what OSS components can you use and benefit from.

Great post. While I was reading it I thought about the term API a lot. Basically if you want to move and develop really fast you have to dip into the already existing components. This is nothing new. Without a proper API people would still write their own file objects in Java. But when you shift over and become more of an application developer instead of a language XY developer you suddenly cannot know all the different APIs out there. This is the point when your community argument starts to shine. Without the community a developer cannot find or learn these different APIs as fast as he needs to.

It will be interesting to see how the Universities will have to change their courses in order to produce these new kind of developers.

@thomas otter: Thanks, it seems to me that this should be treated like <a href="http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html#hacker_already" rel="nofollow">"hacker"</a> See third question.

@phil jones: Steve has certainly been an influence on me, going to read the Jon Udell post now, thanks for the link!

Nice post.

Seems to me that the existence of the web is pushing us all (with greater or lesser degrees of success) to aspire to being synthesizers.

Your communication point also reminds me of some things Jon Udell has been saying, and maybe Steve Yegge. ( Some links here : http://www.nooranch.com/synaesmedia/wiki/wiki.cgi?ProgrammersAndWriters )
